Blog 9: Lesson 1 Reflection

1. I'm most proud of the fact that people seemed to enjoy my overall presentation as well as the props I brought in since they are very important part of my topic.
2. I would give myself an AP because I covered the basis of the rubric and was able to maintain time. Also because I believe I thoroughly discussed what my topic was about as well as my mentorship.
3. What worked for me was the fact that I was forced to memorize my lesson although there were some parts I was weak on it still made me focus more.
4. What didn't work was that I should have used the camera to display pictures of my mentorship to more thoroughly explain what I do and what the business looks like. I think electronics should be allowed.

Extra October Post

For my extra blog post I wanted to give some brief background on my mentor since he is only twenty five years old and since his story is quite interesting.
His name is Alex Ahmed and he is from Egypt, he is 25 years old and he is the owner of a kiosk at Ontario Mills mall where I do my mentorship. So when he was around 20 yrs old he started his first business in Egypt as a broker where people would go to him to sell houses, car, electronics, etc. He had a Facebook page dedicated to this where people would meet via the internet. When he turned 24 he came to America with now job or American education. He was very broke at the time, so with help from his family oversees he started a small business of creams that belonged to his sister at Ontario Mills. This business was steady up about 4 months in when sales dropped. He then changed the products he was selling to toys. Sales have been steady since and he has opened another kiosk in Irvine where he sells the same products.

Blog 7: Independent Component 1 Approval

1. I plan on continuing to go with my mentor and put in more hours there. I was hoping to work on the field hands on with my mentor and interact more with the customers. I'm hoping to gain more experience in the field because that is very important in owning a business. I also hope to learn the finances of the business and how it runs financially.
2. I plan on showing photographic evidence as well as a documentation signed by both my mentor and I demonstrating the hours and days in which I completed hours.
3. Since there are a lot of moving pieces in a business I think experiencing as many aspects of it as possible and role playing will help me understand all the pieces of the puzzle and the different perspectives of it, since there are many positions in a business.

Upcoming Expectations

For the coming months ahead I have several things planned for my mentorship. First I hope to complete half of the hours required for the mentorship before the end of the year. I going to try and go with my mentor two to three times a week and I'll stay approximately 3 hrs each time. My mentor also explained to me that in the coming weeks I was gonna help along in his business hands on with him. Mean while my job when I go to my mentorship is mainly paperwork and filing along with some other things but I must be proficient at those tasks before I can go into the field with the others.

Blog 5 - Mentorship Reflection

1. Describe your experience in how you found your mentorship?
At first I had a different topic and I wasn't very interested in that topic when I found out about this one I immediately changed it. When I did change it I was worried because it was late in the summer and I had to complete the hours for my mentorship. One day I went to mall and I stumbled upon a kiosk and talked with a man working, it turns out he was the owner. A few days later I returned and explained to him about a mentorship and he agreed, I just had to wait a week or two while he cleared up some things with his insurance. After he did he agreed and I officially had a mentor, by then it was already the first week of school.

2. What has been your most important article you have read so far and why?
The most important article I have read so far was one on hiring employees. Instead of hiring based on how they answer general questions and their resume, a business owner proposed a new method of hiring. This new method would focus primarily on the interviewees interests and hobbies. This is very important, not only because it gives them a chance to openly express themselves, but because it gives the hiring manager or business owner a better understanding of their strengths in order to properly place in the business. This in turn utilizes their strengths while maintaining interest in their work, improving efficiency thus improving profits for the business.

How I Got My Mentorship

Since my topic is on business when I went and talked to the owner about a possible mentorship he told me to come in a week after I talked to him. It was kinda out of place since all I would be doing is talking to him. After the time passed I went in and talked to him and explained what I would be doing with him and he was ok with it but he asked me if I was an adult. I was wondering why he asked me that and apparently it's because he had to contact his insurance to see if I could be covered in case of any accident. I had to wait several weeks to hear from him again and it went into the beginning of school, so in the mean time I had to pick another topic but now thats where I will be doing my mentorship.

2. You have to ask 5 questions.  What additional questions do you plan to ask?

  1. Business often times requires a lot of time, do you find this to be true based on your experience? If so can you give me examples?
  2. What school or courses do you think are important in order to help you prosper in future businesses?
  3. Before opening this establishment what were your goals for this particular business?
  4. Is this your first business? If not can you share some of the other businesses you've had?

1. Summer Hrs
2. William Reyes; (718)-644-7978
3. What made you want to pursue a degree in clinical psychology? How long did it take you to obtain a degree in clinical psychology?
4. The most important thing I gained from this is experience is the fact that everything is time sensitive. You must be very focused on achieving your goal and must be very patient with everybody because everyone is different when is comes to talking their mind.
5. My senior project is going to be on clinical psychology. I've always shown an interest in psychology so it wasn't hard to attract me to that topic.
